Plasma Technology

“Plasma” describes a group of technologies, not one standardized skin treatment. Understanding which type of device is being discussed is the first step toward understanding its evidence and risks.

What Is Plasma Technology?

Physical plasma is an ionized gas. It is different from the blood plasma used in platelet-rich plasma, or PRP. Skin-related devices can use plasma in very different ways, from electrical-arc tools that intentionally affect tissue to cold atmospheric plasma systems studied for biological effects. [1] [2]

How Do the Technologies Differ?

  • Electrical-arc or “fibroblast” pens: the FDA's device classification describes an arc between a probe and skin that causes intentional tissue damage for lesion removal or destruction. “Fibroblast” is not a guarantee of a gentle, non-injuring treatment. [1]
  • Cold atmospheric plasma: a separate research field investigating interactions with skin, including wound-related applications. Research on this technology cannot be transferred to a cosmetic arc pen. [2]
  • Specialized surgical plasma systems: certain Renuvion handpieces have specific FDA-cleared uses. Those clearances belong to the identified system, handpiece and indication, not every device marketed as plasma. [3]

What Does the Evidence Support?

Evidence must be matched to the precise device and procedure. Cold-plasma research includes laboratory and clinical work; it does not establish that every marketed device can treat skin disease or rejuvenate skin. Likewise, a surgical system's evidence does not validate a handheld salon device. [2]

The practical question is not “Does plasma work?” but “What has this exact device been evaluated to do, for whom, and with what risks?”

Limitations and Safety

Plasma-pen safety notices describe risks including burns, pigment changes, infection, scarring and eye injury. Treatment near the eyes deserves particular caution. A Canadian safety notice is useful for understanding these hazards, but Canadian authorization status must not be presented as a statement of U.S. law. [4]

Do not use an online guide to remove a mole or an unexplained skin lesion. Seek medical assessment first. Training, professional scope and device instructions must be verified before treatment; a seller's course alone does not establish that a procedure is appropriate.

Choosing a Device or Provider

Request the manufacturer and model, the exact intended use, relevant regulatory documentation, patient-selection criteria and a clear explanation of aftercare and complications. Ask who evaluates skin lesions and who manages an adverse event. Avoid claims of “no risk,” universal suitability or guaranteed lifting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is cold plasma the same as a plasma pen?

Not necessarily. The operating principle and tissue effects must be checked for the exact model.

Is all plasma FDA approved?

No blanket statement is accurate. Regulatory status and permitted indications are device-specific; selected systems have clearances for particular uses. [3]

Is plasma the same as PRP?

No. Physical plasma is ionized gas, while PRP is a blood-derived preparation.
